With the rise in popularity of gambling over the past five years, it’s no wonder that an increasingly large portion of the population is becoming addicted to gambling. Certain groups are at higher risk of developing a gambling addiction than others. One such group is individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). According to Atlantic Behavioral Health, between 10 to 20 percent of individuals with ADHD develop gambling problems. Saul Malek is one such person. Clinically diagnosed with ADHD as a young boy, Saul developed an addiction to gambling as a college student. Now abstinent from gambling for more than five years, he speaks around the country on his experiences. This particular training seeks to offer insight into the experience of living with ADHD and a gambling addiction, providing valuable firsthand experience to clinicians and community members.
Course Objectives:
1) Attendees will gain a firsthand perspective of lived experience of gambling addiction and ADHD.
2) Attendees will develop an understanding of the various risks associated with ADHD and gambling addiction.
3) Attendees will acquire strategies to safeguard individuals with ADHD from gambling addiction.
Presenter Biography
Saul Malek is a 25-year-old Dallas based speaker and educator on gambling harm prevention. Saul developed a gambling addiction as a college sophomore, losing money, time, relationships, and nearly his life. Since finding recovery in 2019, he has made it his mission to help keep others safe from gambling problems. He has spoken to schools (both high school and college), athlete mental health organizations, suicide prevention groups, parent groups, popular news outlets (including the New York Times, National Public Radio, Public Broadcasting Service, and Dallas Morning News), the 2023 Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling annual conference, and has been invited as a keynote to the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling annual conference in March. He has also been awarded as a vendor of 5 school districts across Texas and serves as a board member of the newly formed Texas Coalition on Problem Gambling. He has been lauded as a strong, passionate speaker able to keep audiences engaged and informed on an issue that often goes undiscussed.
