Gambling disorder is a significant behavioral health issue that impacts individuals across various levels of gambling involvement, from non-gamblers to those with diagnosed disorders. Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective intervention, yet misconceptions and assessment errors can hinder appropriate care. This presentation highlights the importance of precise diagnostic practices for gambling disorder, explores the spectrum of gambling involvement—from non-gambling to disordered gambling—and addresses common myths and errors in assessment. Participants will gain valuable insights into assessing gambling behaviors accurately and supporting those directly and indirectly affected by gambling.
Course Objectives:
1) Understand the Spectrum of Gambling Involvement:
Examine the continuum of gambling behaviors, including non-gambling, social gambling, at-risk/problem gambling, and gambling disorder, to improve diagnostic precision and intervention strategies.
2) Challenge and Correct Common Myths:
Identify and address common myths and misconceptions about gambling behaviors, which can lead to underdiagnosis, overdiagnosis, or misdiagnosis, and complicate treatment approaches.
3) Implement Best Practices in Assessment:
Learn assessment techniques that consider the full range of gambling behaviors, focusing on accurate identification of problematic patterns and co-occurring issues.
4) Promote Informed Clinical Decisions:
Apply knowledge of the gambling continuum to make informed clinical decisions that support individualized care, targeting appropriate interventions for each level of gambling involvement.
Presenter Biography
Andrew J. Schreier is an Independent Clinical Supervisor, Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, Board Approved Clinical Consultant, and International Certified Gambling Counselor – II. Mr. Schreier graduated from Ottawa University with a Master’s Degree in Counseling and Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Human Services. He is the Wisconsin Clinical Coordinator for Community Medical Services that provides medicated-assisted treatment for individuals with opioid use disorder. He provides oversight and guidance for all clinical and behavioral health services. Mr. Schreier also works at New Life Resources, Inc. that provides individual counseling/therapy, children and adolescent services, couples/marital counseling, group therapy, and consultation. Experience over the years includes working in a group home, halfway house, residential, medicated-assisted treatment, and outpatient treatment settings. He presents on various topics related to substance use, mental health, gambling, clinical supervision, ethics, and various other topics to statewide and national audiences. Mr. Schreier is the host of “Talking Addiction & Recovery” Podcast.
